POACHING CRISIS: RHINO SLAUGHTER CONTINUES
•Soldiers stopped night patrols due to lack of good equipment and weapons to match the poachers.
•Anti-poaching unit weapons were taken away by President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s government early in 2018.
Reports reveals that, two Rhinos were poached last night (March 22 2020) at Chief Island Okavango Delta where more than 70 carcasses of dead Rhinos litter the place. This takes the number of Rhinos poached in Botswana to nearly 72 in only ten months.
Following the death of a BDF soldier on anti-poaching operations recently, soldiers stopped night patrols due to lack of good equipment and weapons to match the poachers. Anti-poaching unit weapons were taken away by President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s government.
Masisi who is now on self-isolation due to Corona promised two months ago to reveal strategies to end poaching in Botswana and since then has not breathed a word on the crisis. Less than 300 Rhinos now remain in Botswana.
