Teachers union calls for schools to be closed immediately

Teachers union calls for schools to be closed immediately.

Teachers union, BOSETU has called for schools to be closed until after the peak of the coronavirus, when the curve begins to flatten.

In a statement on Monday evening, the union says, government should also extend academic year to 2021 to enable students to adequately cover the syllabus.

BOSETU says, has on several occasions, pointed out to the powers that be, that educational institutions are naturally delicate, sensetive, vulnerable and quite susceptible when it comes highly contagious diseases, COVID – 19 inclusive.

This is so because schools are the only industries where people in their hundreds congregate and spend the whole day together. Schools as well, harbor mostly young and energetic people who are quite difficult to control when it comes to adherence to COVID – 19 preventative protocols.

It is in view of the above that we have consistently maintained that educational institutions should be maintained at the highest level of compliance with the COVID –19 protocols for preventative purposes.

“In view of recent COVID – 19 surge in our country, the increased rate of local transmissions, the vulnerability of our school environments, and of course, the consequent closure of schools within Greater Gaborone, we call upon government to;

•Immediately close all educational institutions while the current spike is being monitored.

•Extend the 2020 academic to April 2021 to enable students to adequately cover the syllabus.

Teachers union called for the closure of schools until after the Covid-19 peak.

Manuel said the decision to call for the closure of schools was — in part — influenced by reflecting on the changing science in terms of the various guidelines, as well as the deteriorating mental health of teachers.
